THE HIDDEN FACE OF SLAVERY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY Slavery a thing of the past? NO!!! it still exists but is much less visible than when the slave trade from Africa to the Americas took place. It is a deeply rooted phenomenon that haunts many ethnic and social groups, hidden within the social and economic fabric of countries throughout the globe. Hi, my name is Karen Kyster and I have been working on this subject together with Dr. Robert Kreger for my Scholars Honors project for the spring 2000 semester of Geography 5. My paper, entitled "Slavery Among Women and Children in Third World Nations" is available through this site. I encourage you to read it and other material on the subject to gain more knowledge on this disturbing reality. I was totally unaware of it until I decided to look for a topic for my research paper and came across the word "slavery" in a United Nations report. It was incredible to me that this was taking place at the end of the twentieth century and my research on the project has shown me that it is by no means isolated to a few spots on earth. Unfortunately, lack of awareness makes it difficult to combat this practice because its eradication is not only dependent on international organizations and governments; it takes action from all of us by getting involved and making it known to others. Non-government organizations cannot work alone, they need support from people like us to continue their work.
