COURSE MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES:  Legal Studies:  Terminology and Transcription 5th ed., Roderick-Bolton,  2004, Thomson South-Western, CD-rom Included

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The text-workbook is intended to give students knowledge and understanding of approximately 900 terms commonly used in the legal field. The students will learn to define the terms and to use them in legal context. Pronunciation guides are provided for each word, and the correct pronunciation is reinforced by recorded dictation. The pronunciation guides were adapted to or taken from Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Keyboarding practice from printed copy will assist students in learning the correct spelling of each term, and all objectives are reinforced as students learn to transcribe the terms from recorded dictation. Therefore, upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

(1)   correctly spell, pronounce, and define the legal terms presented;

(2)   transcribe the legal terms on a computer either directly from recorded dictation or from machine shorthand notes.

Because of the tear-out feature of the text-workbook, the author suggests that pages to be copied on a computer be torn out first and put to the side of the keyboard. If the machine shorthand procedure is used, have students tear out the appropriate page and put it on the desk when writing on their shorthand machine. In both instances, students will find it easier to work with individual pages than with an open book.

TRANSCRIPTION:  Transcription from CD for each lesson is worth 5 points each.  160 Points

HOMEWORK:  Self-evaluations A & B for each lesson are worth 3 points each.  All self-evaluations must be complete and turned in on time to receive full credit.  Just send the correct answers.  96 Points
