CIS 101 Intro. to Computer Information Systems
Windows 7 Lab - File Management
Homework Preparation:
Please read all of the instructions before
proceeding to work on the assignment.
If you have the Windows 7 operating system
then DO NOT
read the following chapters in your lab book:
- Exploring the Basics of Microsoft Windows XP
tutorial pages WIN 1 - 33
- Managing Your Files tutorial,
pages FM 1 - 18
Instead you will be reading/using the
following PDF files:
Tutorial 1
Exploring the Basics of Microsoft Windows 7
Tutorial 2 Organizing Your Files
- If you are new to Windows and computers,
then I strongly recommend that you read and do the
Tutorial 1
Exploring the Basics of Microsoft Windows 7 sessions 1.1 and 1.2.
If you are already familiar with Windows, then review it for
background information.
- Read/review the Tutorial 2 Organizing Your Files
sessions 2.1 and 2.2. If you decide to do
the tutorial then you will need a set of files.
Download and unzip (uncompress) the
Tutorial.zip to your USB Flash Drive.
The steps to unzip the files are in the attached
document.
Please note I need to update this document, but the steps are very
similar. Right-click the Data Files link instead of the FM.zip
link. Also, you will see the file is the Tutorial.zip versus
the FM.zip file.
- The above PDF files were provided by the
publisher for free. They were scanned in and are OK quality.
At least they were free. The PDF files were running late and
so I wrote up a brief document on how to do the file
management commands using Windows 7. You may use this
document
as well to help with preparing for the homework assignment.
Homework Steps:
- For the homework assignment you will need another set
of files to work with. Download and unzip (uncompress) the
File
Management Homework.zip file to your USB Flash Drive.
The steps for unzipping files are explained in the attached
document.
- Open Windows Explorer and view the
unzipped files. Make sure you can see the folders in the left
pane. Select the Organize button, Layout option, and then
Navigation pane to get the folders on the left pane.
- In the File Management Homework folder
create two file folders. One named Excel and the other named
Word.
- Move all of the Excel .xls files in to the
Excel folder.
- Move all of the Word .doc files in to the Word
folder.
- Copy the Coffee Bean.bmp file to the
Word folder.
- Rename the Notes.txt file to Term Paper
Notes.txt.
- Make a copy of the Term Paper Notes.txt file
and call it
English Term Paper Notes.txt .
Hint: copy the file and then rename
the copied file.
- Delete the File One.txt file
- Change the view to the Details View.
Display the file extensions. Steps: click the Organize
button, Folder and search options, View tab,
uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" option,
and then click the OK button.
- Sort the files by file type.
Hint: click the Type column heading.
- Open the Word program.
Type the following:
- CIS 101 Windows File Management
Homework
- Class Meeting Day and Time
(example: TUTH 12:30)
- Your Name
In Windows Explorer view the
files and folders in the File Management folder. Use the Details View and sort the
files by file type. Create a screen shot
using the Alt and Print Screen keys. Paste the screen shot in to the
Word document. Confused? Never done this before?
Read this
document .
Open the Excel folder. Use the Details View and sort the files by file
type. Create a screen shot and paste it in to
the Word document under the first screen shot.
Open the Word folder. Use the Details View and sort the files by file type. Create a screen shot and paste it in to
the Word document under the second screen shot.
Save your homework to your USB drive.
The steps to save a file to a USB drive are:
1. Insert the USB drive in to the drive
port on the computer. 2. Click File
on the menu bar. 3. Point to and click on
Save As on
the File
menu. 4. Type Windows File Management Homework
in the File name text box. 5. Point to and click on the Save in box
