CIS 101 Intro. to Computer Information Systems

Windows XP Lab - File Management

This lab assignment is from the Introduction to Office 2007 lab book.  Please read all of the instructions before proceeding to work on the assignment.

If you are new to computers and the Windows operating system then I strongly recommend that you read and do the Exploring the Basics of Microsoft Windows XP tutorial pages WIN 1 - 33 before working on the following assignment.

  1. Read and do the Managing Your Files tutorial, pages FM 1 - 18 to review the commands in the Windows Explorer.  For the tutorial you will need a set of files.  Download and unzip (uncompress) the FM.zip file to your USB Flash Drive.  The steps to unzip the files are in the attached document.
  2. For the homework assignment you will need another set of files to work with.  Download and unzip (uncompress) the File Management Homework.zip file to your USB Flash Drive.  The steps for unzipping files are explained in the attached document.
  3. Open Windows Explorer and view the unzipped files.  Make sure you can see the folders in the left pane.
  4. In the File Management Homework folder create two file folders.  One named Excel and the other named Word.
  5. Move all of the Excel .xls files in to the Excel folder.
  6. Move all of the Word .doc files in to the Word folder.
  7. Copy the Coffee Bean.bmp file to the Word folder.
  8. Rename the Notes.txt file to Term Paper Notes.txt.
  9. Make a copy of the Term Paper Notes.txt file and call it English Term Paper.txt .  Hint: copy the file and then rename the copied file.
  10. Delete the File One.txt file
  11. Change the view to the Details View.  Display the file extensions.
  12. Sort the files by file type.
  13. Open the Word or WordPad program.  (Please note:  if you use WordPad, then you may have a problem with the file size being more than 25 megabytes which is the limitation for uploading files to TalonNet.  You may compress the WordPad file using Windows XP or later.  The steps are:  Right-click the file, select from the shortcut menu Send to..., then Compressed Folder.  Upload the .zip file to the assignment in TalonNet.)  To avoid these problems I recommend Word and not WordPad.  Remember you can always use the computers on campus if you have a problem.

Type the following:

  • CIS 101 Windows File Management Homework
  • Class Meeting Day and Time (example: TUTH 12:30)
  • Your Name

In Windows Explorer view the files and folders in the File Management folder.  Use the Details View and sort the files by file type.  Create a screen shot using the Alt and Print Screen keys.  Paste the screen shot in to the Word/WordPad document.  Confused?  Never done this before?  Read this document .
Open the Excel folder.  Use the Details View and sort the files by file type.  Create a screen shot and paste it in to the Word/WordPad document under the first screen shot.
Open the Word folder.  Use the Details View and sort the files by file type.  Create a screen shot and paste it in to the Word/WordPad document under the second screen shot.
Save your homework to your USB drive.

The steps to save a file to a USB drive are:

1. Insert the USB drive in to the drive port on the computer.
