CIS 151 Excel For I.T.
Excel Tutorial 1 - Getting Started with Excel
Please read all of the directions before
getting started on the assignment.
- Please note: Throughout the book it
will instruct you to save your files. In the computer labs on
campus you will need to save the files to your USB drive. If
you are using your own computer, then you may save the file to the
drive of your choice (hard drive, USB, etc.).
- Data file notes: In order to do
the tutorials you will need a set of files. The files are in TalonNet
on the Resources page in the Data Files folder. The data file links
are .zip files (compressed
set of files). You will need to download and unzip
(uncompress) the files before using them. Right-click the file
link to get the shortcut menu. Select the Save Target As
option and save the file to your drive. You will then need to
unzip (uncompress) the .zip file. If you are not
familiar with unzipping files please read pages FM17 - FM19 or read the
Unzipping Files
document for a
general set of instructions. The example is from my CIS 101
class.
For SAM projects you will download the
files following the directions in the SAM Assignment Project.
- Additional data file notes:
Please note I repeat the above two
steps in all of the assignment directions just in case you skip an
assignment. If you have already downloaded all of the files
for all of the tutorials, then you do not need to do step 2 again.
Also, sometimes you will need to create your own file from scratch.
A good place to check for the beginning files is on the bottom of
the first page of the tutorial. For example in this tutorial
on page EX1 you see that there are no starting data files (none) for
the Tutorial. You will be creating a new file. Also, you
can check the ending file list on the last page of the tutorial.
For example for Tutorial 1 look on page EX56.
- Read and do the steps in Excel Tutorial 1 pages
EX1 - EX48.
- On page 46 you will find the steps for
viewing the formulas in your worksheet.
Please note when SAM or I am grading homework we always check your formulas.
So don't take shortcuts and just type in the answers/values/numbers
instead of the formulas. Be sure to always use the formulas in
the steps. If you have difficulty with a formula then email me
with your question and attach the file. I will help you out.
The main advantage of using an electronic spreadsheet is the
formulas.
- Notes:
- Trouble?: If
you have trouble finding the
` grave key it is
located under the Esc escape key which
is in the upper left corner of the
keyboard. Also, you can view
formulas by clicking the Show Formulas
button on the Formulas tab.
- Why print out the formulas?
Let me tell you a few reasons
why it is important to print the
formulas. The book gives you the
formulas, but in the "real world"
you have to figure out the formulas
yourself. If it takes you a long
time to figure out the formulas, then
you will want backup copies of these
formulas both in print and in a second
electronic file. This is especially important
for complex formulas. Another
reason is that other workers may use
your files and so it makes good
documentation for them.
- Tip: When I
print out the formulas I also use the
print grid lines and row and column
headings options. These options
are in the Page Setup dialog box.
You can access this dialog box via Page
Layout tab, click the Sheet Options
dialog box launcher button or File,
Print, Page Setup link or Print Preview
button, Page Setup link.
- Obviously for the online class you
do not submit printouts, but submit the
file.
- Do Case Problem 1 (Altac Bicycles) on pages
EX50 - EX51. When you are done your spreadsheets should look
like this
document. If you have done the formulas correctly then you
will have the same values as shown in the above document.
Please note there maybe multiple pages in the answer document so
click the Next Page arrow to see all of the pages. I do not
provide the formulas. You are to figure them out yourself.
If you have trouble, then email me. I will help you.
Also, please note we are not using SAM so please ignore the
directions about SAM.
- Online students: Upload the
RipCity Digital Orders.xlsx and Altac
Bicycles.xlsx files to
the Excel Tutorial 1 assignment on the class website in TalonNet.
Please note that you must submit both files at the same time to the
assignment in TalonNet. So complete both the tutorial and
the Case Problem 1 before logging in to TalonNet and submitting the assignment.
- Traditional students:
During the lab time show the
above
files listed in step 6 on your computer screen to me.
