CIS 151 Excel For I.T.
Excel Assignment 1 - Introduction to Excel: What Can I Do with
a Spreadsheet?
- Please note: Throughout the book it
will instruct you to save your files. In the computer labs on
campus you will need to save the files to your USB drive. If
you are using your own computer, then you may save the file to the
drive of your choice (hard drive, USB, floppy, etc.).
- Data file notes: In order to do
this assignment and the remaining assignments you will need a set of files. Here is a
link to the
Excel files for chapters 1 - 10. The link is to a .zip file (compressed
set of files). You will need to download and unzip
(uncompress) the files before using them. If you are not
familiar with unzipping files please read the
Unzipping Files document for a
general set of instructions. The example is from my CIS 101
class.
- Read Excel Chapter 1 pages 69 - 117.
- Do all four hands-on exercises
described on pages 69 - 117.
- When you are finished with Exercise 4,
step 2 the Jake's Gym spreadsheet should look like Figures 1.46 on page
116.
Please be sure to double check your spreadsheet against this figure before submitting it
for grading. You may practice Step 3 pages 116 - 117.
Please note when I am grading homework I always check your formulas.
So don't take shortcuts and just type in the answers/values/numbers
instead of the formulas. Be sure to always use the formulas in
the steps. If you have difficulty with a formula then email me
with your question and attach the file. I will help you out.
The main advantage of using an electronic spreadsheet are the
formulas.
- Do the practice exercise #1 Verifying a
Debit Card on pages 122 - 123. Be sure to check your
spreadsheet against figure 1.48 on page 123 before you submit it for
grading.
- Do the practice exercise #3 Temperature
Data on pages 125 - 126. Be sure to check your file against
figure 1.50 on page 126 before submitting the assignment for
grading.
- Online students: Upload the
chap1_ho4_jake_solution, chap1_pe1_debitcard_solution and chap1_pe3_temperature_solution files to
the Excel 1 assignment on the class website in TalonNet.
Please note that you must submit both files at the same time to the
assignment in TalonNet. So complete both the Jake's Gym and
the Temperature Comparison spreadsheets before logging in to
TalonNet and submitting the assignment.
- Traditional students:
During the lab time show the
chap1_ho4_jake_solution, chap1_pe1_debitcard_solution and chap1_pe3_temperature_solution
files on your computer screen to me.
