CIS 151 Excel For I.T.
Excel Tutorial 8 - Developing an Excel Application
This tutorial walks you through creating
an Excel Application. What's an application? Well it is a
program/file that you create for other people to use. It has
automated features and data validation in it.
This tutorial is a very interesting and challenging assignment if you
have never created macros or did any programming before. Here are
a few tips to keep in mind while doing this assignment:
1. Read all of the steps
carefully.
2. Right before you create your macros you might want to save a backup
file. Section 8.3 is where you learn to create macros. So it
would be a good idea to save a backup file at this point.
Specifically before you do the steps on page 459 and then again on page
463.
3. Practice the steps for the macro before recording it. Then go
back to the backup file to do the actual recording.
4. Make sure you STOP recording when you are done creating the macro.
5. Test your macro. When testing a macro again and again be sure
to return the file back to it's original data, formats, etc. before
testing it again. Also, when testing a macro multiple times
where you save a file you may have to either rename the file or replace
the file.
I hope these tips help you.
Please read all of the directions before
getting started on the assignment.
- Please note: Throughout the book it
will instruct you to save your files. In the computer labs on
campus you will need to save the files to your USB drive. If
you are using your own computer, then you may save the file to the
drive of your choice (hard drive, USB, etc.).
- Data file notes: In order to do this
assignment you will need a set of files. The files are in TalonNet
on the Resources page in the Data Files folder. The data file links
are .zip files (compressed
set of files). You will need to download and unzip
(uncompress) the files before using them. Right-click the file
link to get the shortcut menu. Select the Save Target As
option and save the file to your drive. You will then need to
unzip (uncompress) the .zip file. If you are not
familiar with unzipping files please read pages FM17 - FM19 or read the
Unzipping Files
document for a
general set of instructions. The example is from my CIS 101
class.
- Read and do the steps in Excel Tutorial
8 pages
EX419 - EX474.
- Do the
REVIEW Assignment on pages EX475 - 476. When you are done your
spreadsheets should look like this
document.
Please note
there are multiple pages in the answer documents so click the Next
Page arrow to see all of the pages.
- Online students: Upload the
Theatre
with Macros.xlsm, and
Rentals with Macros.xlsm files to
the Excel Tutorial 8 assignment on the class website in TalonNet.
Please note that you must submit all files at the same time to the
assignment in TalonNet. So complete both the tutorial and
the Review Assignment before logging in to TalonNet and submitting the assignment.
- Traditional students:
During the lab time show the
above
files listed in step 5 on your computer screen to me.
