CIS 151 Excel For I.T.
Assignment 1 - Getting Started With Microsoft Office 2010
Please read all of the directions before
getting started on the assignment.
- You might be thinking "Hmm...
getting started with Office? I thought I was learning Excel." Normally
I would not have you do this chapter, but I think it will be helpful
to most everyone due to two reasons. One is that Office 2010's
interface and navigation has changed significantly since the 2003
version and some since the 2007 version. And, for some students this is their first class
using Office and they need to know the basics before getting in to
the Excel software. So enjoy. This assignment will be
easier and take less time than the Excel assignments.
- Speaking of being ready for this class....
technically there is no prerequisite for this class, but we do
recommend that you are computer literate and know file management
commands. If you have taken CIS 101 or 102 or a similar class
than you are ready for this class. So I recommend that you
read/review/do the Managing Your Files chapter. Do
the chapter review test on the Lectures & Resources page.
Then take the quiz in TalonNet on the Test & Quizzes page. The
quiz is optional, not graded. Or, take the quiz first to see
if you need to go back and read the chapter. It is a short
chapter. Also, please note the chapter uses Windows 7, but
it is still relevant for previous versions of Windows. If you
want to practice the commands in the chapter then you will need the
data files. Please see the note below on how to get the data
files.
- Tip: Page FM16 explains file
extensions and how most computers are set to NOT show
the extensions. I prefer to see my file
extensions. If you want to see the file extensions
then follow these steps: Windows 7 - in the Windows
Explorer window, click the Organize
button, select the Folder and search options
item, click the View tab, and then
uncheck the
Hide extensions for know file types option, and
then click the OK button.
- Please note: Throughout the book it will instruct you to save
your files. In the
computer labs on campus you will need to save the files to your USB drive.
If you are using your own computer, then you may save the
file to the drive of your choice (hard drive, USB, etc.). I
suggest that if you are saving to your hard drive then create a CIS
151 Excel folder in Documents or My Documents (older versions of
Windows).
- Data file notes: In order to do this
assignment you will need a set of files. The files are in TalonNet
on the Resources page in the Data Files folder. The data file links
are .zip files (compressed
set of files). You will need to download and unzip
(uncompress) the files before using them. Right-click the file
link to get the shortcut menu. Select the Save Target As
option and save the file to your drive. You will then need to
unzip (uncompress) the .zip file. If you are not
familiar with unzipping files please read pages FM17 - FM19 or read the
Unzipping Files
document for a
general set of instructions. The example is from my CIS 101
class.
- Read the Getting Started With
Microsoft Office 2010 chapter.
- Do the steps in the chapter for
practice.
- Do the chapter review test found on the Lectures
& Chapter Reviews page in TalonNet. I randomly select 20
questions from the review test and put them on your quiz (item 8).
- Take the Getting Started with Office
2010 quiz by the due date. It is worth 20 points. It is
a 1 hour timed test, but it should not take that long. It will
only have 20 questions on it.
- Do not
submit any files from the steps in the chapter.
- Tip: Do you ask yourself
"Where is the ______ command in 2010?" Use the command
guides at the microsoft.com
website to find commands that are cross-referenced
between 2007 and 2010.
- PowerPoint Presentations: Detailed
presentations are on the Lectures & Chapter Review page for your
review.
- Videos: In last year's class I created a
few videos for Office & Excel 2007. They may be helpful to
you. The videos are located on the Lectures & Resources
page.
