CIS 201 Systems Analysis & Design

Project 1

  1. Read Chapter 1 in your textbook.
  2. Read and work through the Case-Sim: SCR Associates on page 34.  You will be using this case study/simulation through out the class.  At the end of each simulation session there is a task list of things you need to do.  You may complete all of the tasks, but I will be only asking for specific task items for grading purposes.  Please be sure to submit only the task items I request.
  • Note:  you need a password which is in the preface of your textbook.  To save you time looking for the password I will give it to you.  The password is sad7.  I am guessing it is short for Systems Analysis and Design, 7th edition.
  1. For this simulation session please submit the following tasks:
  • Task #3:  Create the organization chart in Word or Visio.  Some hints:  figure 1-33, page 26 shows an example of a typical IT department.  Also there are example organization charts on pages 42 - 43.
  • Task #4:  Find 3 similar IT Consulting firms on the Internet.  Give the Web address and write a brief description (one paragraph) of the company.
  • Software Notes:  You can use Office 2003 or 2007, or Visio 2003  to do your assignments in this class.  Office Professional 2007 can be purchased at a huge discount at the following website:  http://www.collegesoftware.org .  Other development software such as Visual Studio 2005, Visio, etc. can be purchased at very huge discounts through the MSDN Academic Alliance program.  To order this software you will need to send me your email address.  This is the email address that our program administrator will use to setup your MSDN account and the email where you will receive your log in id and password.  Please remember that the process of ordering software will take at least one week.  So plan ahead.
  • Hints:  Never created an organization chart in Word?  Never used Visio?

For Word here is a brief explanation.  There are two ways Drawing Tools or the Organization Chart Tool.  I recommend the Organization Chart Tool.

Word Drawing Tools:

Word 2003 - On the Drawing Toolbar.  Use AutoShapes, Flowcharts to get the boxes and draw the box.  Then right-click the box and select Add Text.  Type the text.  Use the Line tool on the Drawing toolbar to draw a line connecting the boxes.  For organization charts you use lines without arrowheads.  Make sure you choose the correct Line drawing tool.

Word 2007 - the drawing toolbar only comes up after you select your shape.  On the Insert Tab/Ribbon select Shapes and select the box shape.  Then draw the box.  The Drawing Tools will now show up on the Format Tab/Ribbon.  Look for the Line shape on the left-side of the ribbon.   Select the line and draw the line between the boxes.  I hope this makes sense and helps.  I too am new to the Office 2007.

Word Organization Chart Tool:

Word 2003 - From the menu select Insert, Picture, Organization Chart.  In Help you can search for a tutorial.  Use this phrase "Creating an organization chart in Office 2003".  Select this help item and it will take you to Microsoft's website and a document that applies to the following Microsoft Office programs:  Excel 2003, PowerPoint® 2003, Visio® 2003, and Word 2003.

Word 2007 - Insert Tab, click SmartArt.  In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic gallery, click Hierarchy, click an organization chart layout (such as Organization Chart), and then click OK.  This will get you started.  There's a tutorial in Help ?.  Click the ? button (upper-right corner in Word) Search for "Create an organization chart".

For Visio here's a tutorial document that I wrote and used in my CIS 103 Programming and Logic class.  It will get you started using Visio and you should be able to create an organization chart using the basic flowcharting template.  There is an organization chart template you may prefer to use.  You can find it in the File menu, Shapes, Organization Chart option.  Please note the document was written for Visio 2003.

  1. Type the following at the top of your document:
  • CIS 201 Project 1
  • Class Meeting Day and Time (example: Wednesday 7:00 PM or Online)
  • Your Name
  1. Submit your homework for grading:

Traditional students:  Print the homework.  If there is more than one page please staple them together.
Online students:  Upload the project document(s) to the Project 1 assignment in TalonNet.

  1. Optional:  Review the PowerPoint presentation and do the Chapter Review test found on the Lectures & Chapter Reviews Web page.

Be sure to submit/turn in the project by the due date.
