Student in Crisis Protocol for Faculty & Staff

Your Role as Faculty/Staff

  • If the student has said they want to hurt themselves or your feel that they are a danger to self, please bring them immediately to Student Health Services or call Cerritos College Police at 562-924-3618
  • If you or a student are concerned about a student’s mental well-being or you feel like they are in crisis, please walk them to Student Health Services.
  • Do not leave until the student has been greeted by the staff at the Front Desk but please exit after this warm handoff to preserve the student’s privacy and confidentiality.
  • If you are not able to walk the student to Student Health Services and it is not a crisis, please refer the student to contact Student Health Services.
  • Please complete the CAIR form after the above actions have been completed

Please ask student:

  • Do you have thoughts of wanting to kill yourself?
  • Do you have a plan/date/time

If they answer YES to either or both questions: Immediately call one Cerritos College Police at 562-924-3618 and provide the following information:

  • Student Name & Birthdate
  • Home address
  • Current location (may not be at their home address)
  • Phone number
  • Exact words student stated and situation.

Please complete the CAIR FORM, after the above actions have been completed.  
 
If they answer NO to either or both questions:

Refer the student to Student Health Services at 562-860-2451, ext. 2321 or to walk-in during operating hours.

Your Role After-Hours for Suicidal Ideation:

  • If the student said they want to hurt themselves or you feel they are a danger to self, please call Cerritos College Police at 562-924-3618.
  • Cerritos College Police officer will be called to your location to assess the student and determine next steps.
  • Immediately after the incident, complete the CAIR form so that Student Health Services can follow up with the student during regular business hours. 
     

Your Role After Hours for Non-Suicidal Ideation:

  • Refer the student to Student Health Services at 562-860-2451, ext. 2321 or to walk-in during operating hours. 

 

Faculty to notify EPP Office who will advise student’s high school which will follow K-12 protocols. 

Faculty to notify K-12 staff to report emergency or concerns. 
Faculty will follow all protocols as outlined for currently enrolled students who have paid the Health Fee. Under California state law, students aged 12 and older may request and receive mental health services, including voluntary crisis services. The therapist may obtain consent directly from the student if the consent meets the criteria specified in the law.

Information for Students in Crisis

  • You will be greeted by our staff at the Front Desk and guided to meet in a more private space. If you were walked to Student Health by Faculty/Staff, they will leave after Student Health Staff greets you.
  • The Front Desk staff will briefly clarify the reason for the visit including:
    • whether you currently identify as in crisis or not;
    • confirm that you are a currently enrolled student eligible for services;
    • and, if you are interested in seeking out mental health services. 
  • The Front Desk staff will guide you through the completion of consent forms and surveys required for all students seeking services.
  • Crisis services will be rendered by a Therapist or Nurse Practitioner.  
  • The Front Desk staff will guide you through the completion of consent forms and surveys required for all students seeking services.
  • A routine appointment with a Therapist will be scheduled at your convenience.
