Explanation of Assignments:

¨       Online Orientation (100 pts.): All students are required to complete this orientation. It consists of an online test that is based on information contained in the Basic Syllabus for the class.  The test is located in TalonNet and students can take it up to three times.  The highest score earned on this test will be the one recorded.

¨       Chapter tests (225 points):  Each test has 25 questions; each question is worth 1 point.  In addition, there is an ungraded practice quiz that includes questions from each chapter and some of the questions will be included on the graded test.   It is highly recommended that you take advantage of these practice quizzes.

¨       Interactive/online discussion (90 points; 30 points for each discussion): In each learning module you will have a choice between two activities/discussions.  One topic will be social reform movements within the United States and the other topic will be on American foreign policy. You can select the one that most interests you. In addition, you can select foreign policy for one learning module and social reform in another.  Each discussion requires that you complete an activity (homework) that gives you information and ideas for the online discussion. This information includes viewing video excerpts and reading information on various educational websites. The videos are located in Talon Net and the activity provides the web links for additional research. The online discussion is NOT a chat session in which you need to participate at specific times.  Instead, you have the freedom to participate at any time during the dates specified for the discussion. Each discussion is worth 30 points. Therefore, if you do not participate in or prepare for these discussions, your grade will suffer.

¨       Exam Essay (90 points; 30 points for each essay): The exam essay is directly connected to the information in the activity/discussion and relevant sections of the textbook. It will be posted in Course Compass at least one week before it is due. Requirements and directions for submission will be included in posted exam essay.

¨       Project: Betty Friedan: The Personal is Political (84 points): You are required to read, comment on and write an essay on the biography on Betty Friedan. This project has two specific assignments:

·         Three online discussions, one in each learning module. You will be required to read three chapters in each learning module and make comments in an online discussion. There are nine chapters in the book so you will read and comment on three chapters in each learning module.

·         An essay on some topic or aspect of the biography. The essay is worth 30 points.

·         Points to be earned:

·         Comments in online discussion: 6 points for each chapter; 54 points total.

·         Final essay: 30 points

¨       Extra Credit Points: You can earn 30 points extra credit during the semester. Extra credit assignments will be available in each learning module so that you can choose an option at any point in the class.

¨       Missed Tests and Assignments: You cannot make-up missed tests and assignments. To compensate, I will drop the two lowest test scores and replace those dropped scores with an average of the other tests. Typically, this improves one’s grade a couple of percentage points. In addition, submitting extra credit can compensate for low grades on exam essays and on discussion comments.

¨       Policy of Attendance/Drop: If you do not complete tests and assignments on a consistent basis and/or your work does not earn passing grades (70% or higher), I will likely drop you from the class. I will monitor your progress and send a “warning” if you are in jeopardy of not passing the class or being dropped.

¨       Chapter Tests: If you would prefer to take the chapter tests on campus, please contact me.
