History 102 Learning Module 1/Online

Activity 2: The Terrible Transformation[1]

In this activity, you will be asked to learn more about the Terrible Transformation --- the transport of African captives to the American colonies in the 17th century.  The background of this historical event is discussed in Chapter 2 of the textbook, a chapter that is not assigned for this class. Thus, this activity offers a more detailed account, most especially the horrors suffered by enslaved Africans in the middle passage.

You are asked to read (1) an overview about the Middle Passage and (2) an excerpt from Chapter 2 from the autobiography of Oluadah Equiano. Also, you can look at visual images of the African slave trade and the Middle Passage.
