Form: Succulent perennial with long trailing stems forming extensive mats.
Leaves: Very thick, 3-sided leaves, 3 – 4 inches long.
Flower: Large, 1 – 2 inch wide magenta to rose-pink flower with numerous linear petals and many stamens.
Blooming: April – September.
Plant Community: Coastal dunes and sandy bluffs. Non-native, probably originating in South Africa.
Uses: Landscaping; edible fruit.
Common name: Aka “Iceplant”.
Latin name: Carpobrotus means “edible fruit”. Species name refers to first specimens that were collected from Chile. Formerly known as C. aequilaterus or Mesembryanthemum chilense.
