The EV Silverado is General Motors’ (GM) first all-electric pickup and utilizes a new battery platform called Ultium. General Motors supports the GM ASEP program at Cerritos College by donating a wide variety of vehicles, but they haven’t donated any electric vehicles yet. We were the first community college in the nation with this partnership program to offer a class specific to high-voltage vehicles, and this pickup will be utilized in the class, which will run in Spring 2025.
The pickup has a curb weight of 8,200 lbs, and the regular 10,000 lb vehicle lifts are not sufficient to lift these new pickups. GM has required that dealerships install a lift capable of lifting a minimum of 12,000 lbs to support the new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). Our advisory committee members, in Fall 2023, recommended installing a 16,000 lb lift since it could also be used to lift medium-duty work trucks. Our department was able to use Strong Workforce funding to acquire a new aboveground lift that can support 16,000 lbs and safely lift this new generation of EV vehicles. It was installed in May 2024, shortly after the spring semester ended.
