Building Stronger Ties with Native American Community

Student Ethnicity

d

According to the spring 2017 data, Cerritos College’s American Indian/Alaskan Native students make up the third largest ethnic group among the student population (5.36 %). In order to better serve this student group, Cerritos College is working to strengthen its relationship with the Native American community across Los Angeles County and support them.

Campus representatives met with the The Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission to seek ways to corroborate with the Native American Indian community.

The College has set goals to:

o   Coordinate on- and off-campus resources and support systems for Native American students

o   Attract qualified Native American applicants to seek employment at Cerritos College

o   Generate more communication about and awareness for the needs of Native American students, faculty, and staff on campus

In addition, the College has been working with the Monterrey Tribal TANF office and United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) to foster additional dialogue and communication. The Adult Education and Diversity Program hosts UAII’s American Indian Clubhouse, which meets weekly in Adult Education and provides support, resources, and cultural activities on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. The Clubhouse is open to all Native American families.
