Safe Zone Needs You! Become an Ally for the LGBTQ Community on Campus

Safezone trainingWHAT: The Safe Zone Program educates and trains campus members to serve as Safe Zone Allies in support of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer) students, faculty and staff. It aims to foster a supportive and safe campus atmosphere for all members of the college community.

The next faculty and staff training will be offered for flex credit on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in LA 103. You can RSVP by following the link: http://www.cerritos.edu/registration (it will ask for your Cerritos College log in information). New employees may not be on the flex reporter system yet. Please inform Monica Acuña if you cannot log on.

The Safe Zone Network is a group of college members who are committed to addressing issues of importance and safety to the LGBTQ community through education and advocacy. Members of the Safe Zone Network participate in a four-hour introductory training on issues of awareness and resources for the LGBTQ community. Once members have completed training, they receive a Cerritos College Safe Zone Ally sticker to display, so students will be aware who they can safely approach to ask questions, discuss any issues they may face, or be referred to resources that can assist them. So far, nearly 250 allies have taken the training and are helping LGBTQ students.

Safe Zone also launched the Lunch and Learn series that explores various topics of LGBTQ issues and helps build inclusive communities for individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Lunch and Learn is a brown bag workshop. where participants bring their own lunch and the Safe Zone Program provides dessert and dialogue.

The next session will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., at the Student Center Stage. “Building Inclusive Spaces Beyond Safe Zone: Ideas into Action” will be presented by Raja Bhattar (They/Their/Theirs), Director, LGBT Campus Resource Center, University of California, Los Angeles.

All Safe Zone events and workshops are open to all members of the campus community.
