Certificate: Manufacture Specialty - ASSET
What made you come to Cerritos College and why?
I chose to attend Cerritos College to continue my education after high school. Since I’ve always been passionate about cars, I was drawn to the ASSET program. I decided to enroll and also pursue a transferable AA degree. I grew up in a family where everyone drove Fords, so when I decided to become an automotive technician, I naturally chose to specialize in working on Fords.
I have earned my associate degree and will be able to transfer to a four-year school to further my education. I was hired at a dealership as a lube tech prior to entering the ASSET program. Through the education provided by Cerritos College, I was promoted to an apprentice position under a master technician. While working full time and attending school, I was able to maintain a high GPA, including several semesters on the dean’s list.
My current plan is to work at the Ford dealership as a technician for a while. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree at California State University, Fullerton, and after that, I may try to move up to a managerial position at a dealership or maybe even own my own independent shop one day.
STUDENT ADVICE
ASSET has provided a foundation for my career as an automotive technician, both academically and practically. One piece of advice is to get hands-on experience early, whether through internships, apprenticeships, or working on personal projects. Hands-on experience can teach you so much that lectures can’t. It will really further your understanding of automotive.
You should not be intimidated by the complexity of the automotive field. Everyone
starts as a beginner, and the more you learn, the more confident you will become.
INSIGHT
When I first entered the program, my goal was to become a mechanic. However, after being exposed to all the additional opportunities that an education in the automotive field can offer, I am now considering either opening my own shop or working my way up at a dealership.
The ASSET program has been extremely helpful in my journey to becoming a successful
automotive technician. It not only provided me with valuable hands-on experience but
also gave me the academic foundation needed to excel in the field. Through the program,
I gained practical skills in real-world settings while completing the coursework necessary
to meet certification requirements. Thanks to the comprehensive training, I achieved
my goal of becoming a certified Ford technician, fully prepared for the challenges
of the industry.
Tony Baron and Steve Borio have been the most influential staff members during my
time at Cerritos College. Both were outstanding teachers who provided invaluable support
and guidance throughout my journey, helping me every step of the way.
