Cerritos College Campus Police have identified the bomb threat suspect from Tuesday,
September 3 as Mohammad Sameem Yaqubi, a 23 year old resident of Long Beach. Yaqubi
was booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Intake Reception Center
for making a Bomb Threat, Battery on a Police Officer, and Resisting a Police Officer.
Yaqubi is not a Cerritos College student.

Today at approximately 11:53 a.m., a male suspect entered a classroom inside of the Math/CIS Building. The suspect told a student inside of the class that he had a bomb and that he was a terrorist. The student immediately informed the instructor. The instructor called 911 (Campus Police). At that time, the suspect fled the building and was apprehended by officers from the Cerritos College Police Department near the Administration Building (by the vehicle drop off). The College followed its campus emergency plan and activated its Emergency Response System, including dispatching Shelter in Place audio messages over the campus’ Public Announcement system. In addition, the College began social media updates along with text and email messages to students and staff.
Campus Police apprehended the suspect without incident. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb Squad investigated the backpack and determined there was no bomb device. All classes were cancelled for the day and campus will be closed until Wednesday, September 4.
Counselors are available for students and staff who may need additional support through our Student Health Center and our Employee Assistance Program. Two sessions for students will be held on Wednesday, September 4 at 11 and on Thursday, September 5 at 11 a.m. in the Conference Center (located behind the Student Center.)
Classes will resume on Wednesday, September 4.

Basic safety precautions
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Know what is typical and what is not.
- Call 9-1-1 from a campus phone or (562) 402-3674 from a mobile phone to report suspicious activity.
- Be aware of parking lots, walkways and restrooms.
- Travel with others with whom you are comfortable when possible, or call Campus Police for a Security Escort if needed.
- Let others know where you are going, especially if you might be there alone.
- If you are uncomfortable, go to a location where there are other people.
- Headphones can eliminate your ability to be aware of your surroundings.
- Move confidently at a steady pace and make eye contact with people.
- Keep keys in hand when moving to a vehicle.
- Keep windows and doors locked.
- Check the interior of a vehicle before getting in.
- Go to the nearest open business or police station if you are being followed.
- Do not confront a fleeing suspect. Establish a safe distance and obtain a good description and direction of travel for the police.
