Fuente Ovejuna posterWHAT: Based on an actual historical event, the play dramatizes the corruption of the commander of the Order of Calatrava and the effects of the commander’s tyranny on the pastoral village of Fuente Ovejuna. The commander, while glorious in battle, lacks moral character and mistreats the villagers. Eventually the villagers stand together and kill the commander. Spanish royals also become involved in the drama when they learn about the commander’s murder: “Fuenteovejuna did it.”
