Before teaching full-time at Cerritos College Carl Stammerjohn operated a one-man custom furniture shop for six years. He did mostly commission work, occasionally creating spec pieces when time permitted. Prior to his career in woodworking, he worked as a middle school math teacher and mechanical engineer. He lives in San Pedro with his wife Lindsey, three dogs, and a cat.
Carl earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly, SLO and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He has taken numerous woodworking courses and seminars at The Cutting Edge, Cerritos College, and various woodworking shows.
His main interest is in furniture. The simplicity and functionality of Shaker design, coupled with the subtle curves found in nature, guide his designs. His attention to detail and craftsmanship guide the construction of each piece. As he increasingly explores the possibilities of veneer, he incorporates it more into his work. He loves sharing his knowledge with others and helping them to explore new ways of looking at things.
