Forensics Team Wins Third Place at National Tournament

Forensics studentsThe Cerritos College Forensics Team competed at the Pi Kappa Delta National Convention and Tournament in Hempstead, New York in March. The team travelled across the country to compete with students from 71 colleges and universities. Team president Anthony Gomez led the way with a Superior Award in impromptu speaking, and Steve Guerra received an Excellent Award in individual debate. TiNa Vejar, Sabrina, Hendifar, and Adriana LaFuente won three of their six debates, contributing to the team’s sweepstakes totals. Debbie Grandin also competed in both speech and debate events.

Between rounds of competition, students were able to explore Manhattan. The team navigated the nation’s busiest subway system, took in sights such as the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Battery Park, visited the American Museum of Natural History, and even ventured to the top of the Empire State Building.

“My competition experience was very educational,” said Anthony. “I think the biggest takeaway was seeing the forensics community and seeing the impact speech and debate has on people’s lives."

The forensics team is actively recruiting new competitors for the 2019-2020 school year. Students interested in trying out for the team this spring should contact full-time coach Nicholas Matthews at nmatthews@cerritos.edu for more information.
