Cerritos College Offers New Transfer Degree in Film, TV, and Electronic Media
Degree prepares students for new media landscape
Cerritos College’s Mass Communications Department will offer a new transfer degree in Film, Television, and Electronic Media, beginning fall 2020.
The new Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Film, Television and Electronic Media keeps abreast of a quickly evolving media landscape, which now combines elements of journalism, social media, radio, and traditional television. The new program will prepare students with hands-on skills to produce digital video, podcasts, and webcasts in the era of YouTube, TikTok and other emerging platforms, in addition to film productions, live television, radio programming, and all that pertains to audio and visual content.
“Smartphones have re-wired our world,” said Christian Brown, department chair of Mass Communications. “In Los Angeles County, the epicenter of media industries and technology, we owe it to our students to offer an academic program that trains a new generation of storytellers who will one day produce high quality entertainment, news and social content on apps and digital-only platforms.”
The new AS-T program requires 18 units in the major and 60 transferable units in the general education courses and electives. The AS-T degree allows students to transfer to the California State University system with guaranteed admission.
“The new degree in film, television, and electronic media gives Cerritos College students an amazing opportunity to learn about the creative industries from our talented faculty,” said Dr. Gary Pritchard, dean of Fine Arts and Communications.
