Black Future Month kicks off with Black Males Fireside Chat

Black Future Month event attendeesCerritos College kicked off Black Future Month with a delicious BBQ lunch catered by the culinary arts program and a fireside chat with Black male leaders from across campus. President Jose Fierro spoke on closing the achievement gap to increase equity and social and economic mobility for students of color.

English Professor Damon Cagnolatti facilitated a discussion with Police Captain Brian Hill; Science, Engineering, and Math Dean Michael Page; LGBTQ Facilitator Antonio "Nio" Lavermon; Department Chair of Journalism Media Studies Christian Brown; Counselor Isaiah Whitfield; and Track and Field Head Coach Chris Richardson. The panelists shared their experiences navigating the education system and thoughts on the meaning of Black futures with students and colleagues.

Following the fireside chat, Vice President of Human Resources/Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mercedes Gutierrez awarded the Black Future Month Book Scholarships to two students who wrote essays identifying and discussing an issue affecting African diaspora communities. Students Kathy Logan and Schadawn Myers received the $250 scholarship, and Schadawn was present to accept her award.
