Mission Statement
The mission of the Cerritos College Art Gallery is to serve as an educational, social and culture enhancement for the Cerritos College academic population as well as the immediate surrounding communities.

HISTORY IS OURS:
Sergio O'Cadiz Moctezuma, 1934-2002
August 24 - October 9, 2026

A Mexican-born artist and architect, living and working in the United States from
the early 1960s, primarily in Orange County, Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma had a prolific
- though, until now, largely under-recognized - creative output for many decades,
including both a professional and private practice. His extensive body of work incorporated
numerous and diverse influences, many, though not all, of which are explored in this
retrospective exhibition at Cerritos College Art Gallery. Early sketches for some
his most celebrated murals and renderings of working collaborations with his architectural
colleagues, as well as examples of his own proposed, but unrealized, public projects,
are prominently featured. Some of his largest paintings of indigenous iconography,
religious themes, and colonial landscapes are also present, as are numerous self-portraits,
studio ephemera and photographs, observational sketches, and detailed figure studies,
all of which provide a deep insight into his daily working practice.
HISTORY IS OURS: Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma, 1934-2002 is co-curated by Cerritos College Art Gallery director, James MacDevitt, and the
gallery’s 2026 Getty Marrow Curatoral Intern, Miguel Zavala-Lopez. Works in the show
are generously on loan from members of the O'Cádiz family, in particular Pilar O'Cádiz,
who has served as a significant champion for the preservation of her father’s work
for many decades.
This exhibition is also part of a year-long investigation into the life and work of
Sergio O'Cádiz Moctezuma, facilitated by Sarah Rafael García and culminating in exhibitions
at Crear Studio in Santa Ana, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, and the Cerritos College

Admission and events are free and open to the public.
Daily Parking is available for $3.00 in Lot 10 in the student white stalls only (use
the QR Code on the parking signs).
