Students Lead Campus’s Effort to Break Free From Plastic

The Cerritos College Board of Trustees adopted a Break Free From Plastic resolution, making the campus the first community college in California to adopt a policy to abandon the use of plastic products. More than 70 percent of the world’s plastic ends up in landfills, incinerators, or drifting in waterways. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish by weight in the world’s oceans, according to projections.

Alumnus Eric Draper, former White House chief photographer for President George W. Bush, was selected as a recipient of the 2021 California Community College Distinguished Alumni Award by the Community College League of California (CCLC).

2021-22 Convocation Cooks up Secret Sauce for Student Success

Cerritos College kicked off the 2021-22 academic year with the Convocation on September 30. Attended by nearly 300 faculty and staff members via zoom, the Convocation was live streamed from the brand-new Performing Arts Center celebrating the campus re-opening this semester.

College Receives CalHOSA Grant to Launch a Mental and Behavioral Health Pathway for High School Students

The Cerritos College Foundation received a $25,000 grant from Cal-HOSA, Inc. to support a mental and behavioral health pathway for high school students. The grant will allow Los Altos High School students to work toward a career in psychosocial recovery and rehabilitation by enrolling in the Cerritos College Mental Health Worker Program. The pathway will provide educational options for Los Altos High School students to obtain a Mental Health Worker certification. The funding will be used for program implementation and to provide financial assistance to students, including textbook and resource assistance, work-based learning travel support, and other program related costs.

Board of Trustees Passes Resolution to Develop District COVID-19 Vaccination/Testing Program

At its Special Board Meeting on August 4, the Cerritos College Board of Trustees passed a resolution outlining COVID-19 safety protocols for in-person attendance this fall. The resolution will take effect on August 5 through the conclusion of the academic year through June 30, 2022, with implementation set for September 30, 2021. The Board will re-convene on August 18 to discuss the District’s plan for execution.

Congresswoman Linda Sánchez Presents Check to Cerritos College as Part of American Rescue Plan

Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) presented a check in the amount of $45,287,637 to Cerritos College on Tuesday, July 6 to highlight the funding the college received through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III).

College Set to Re-Open Campus with In-Person and Hybrid Classes for the Fall 2021 Semester

Cerritos College celebrated the Class of 2021 with both virtual and drive-thru commencement ceremonies on May 27 and 28. The College hosted its first ever Car-mencement drive-thru celebration for graduates. Graduates traveled along a celebration route through a Blue Carpet Zone, received a diploma, and took pictures with friends and family. The College presented 4,600 associate degrees and skills certificates.

College to Celebrate the Class of 2021 with Drive-thru and Online Commencement Ceremonies

Cerritos College will host both virtual and drive-thru commencement ceremonies for its graduating Class of 2021. The virtual event will begin on Thursday, May 27, and the drive-thru ceremony “Carmencement” will be held on Friday, May 28.

College Receives $1.5 Million Clean Transportation Grant to Prepare a Skilled Clean Energy Workforce

Cerritos College’s Advanced Transportation and Logistics Center (ATL) received $1.5 million from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The College received $1-million grant in 2017 and another $1-million grant in 2019 from CEC to develop clean fuel training programs for high schools in underserved communities, regions impacted by poor air quality, and those serving minority populations.

College Receives U.S. Department of Education Grant to Create Teacher Pipeline to Advance Educator Diversity

Cerritos College’s award-winning TeacherTRAC program, in partnership with The Center for Collaborative Education (CCE), El Camino College, and Rio Hondo College, received a three-year, $9 million U.S. Department of Education grant to advance equity in teacher representation by increasing the number of underrepresented groups.

Dennis Falcon Breaks Glass Ceiling as the First Person of Color to Lead Faculty Senate

Meet the newly elected president of the Cerritos College Faculty Senate Dennis Falcon, assistant professor of political science. Dennis, a Chicano of Yaqui descent, is the first person of color to serve as the Faculty Senate President in the College’s 65-year history.
