Cerritos College entrance

Overview

Cerritos College recognizes that students may gain mastery of subject matter through prior experience, independent study, or non-accredited coursework. Credit by Examination (CRX) allows eligible students to demonstrate proficiency and earn college credit for specific approved courses by successfully passing a comprehensive examination.

Eligibility & Policy Guidelines

Enrollment Requirement: Students must be currently enrolled in at least one course at Cerritos College and be in good academic standing.

Course Eligibility: Credit by Exam is only available for specific courses officially approved by academic departments and listed in the college catalog.

Unit Limit: A maximum of 15 units earned through Credit by Examination may be applied toward a degree or certificate at Cerritos College (up to 30 units total for broader Credit for Prior Learning).

Prior Attempt Restriction: Students cannot attempt Credit by Exam for a course in which they have already received college or high school credit, or for a course they have previously failed or audited.

Transfer Warning: Credit awarded through examination is designated as such on the student's transcript. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution (CSU/UC) should consult with a counselor, as transfer universities may have specific policies regarding the acceptance of exam credit.

How to Request Credit by Examination
 

  1. Consult a Counselor: Verify program fit. Schedule an appointment with a Cerritos College Counselor to verify eligibility and ensure CRX fits your educational plan.
  2. Obtain the Petition: Complete official paperwork. Complete the Credit by Examination Petition form available through Admissions & Records or Academic Affairs.
  3. Department Approval: Division review. Submit the petition to the appropriate Academic Division Chair or Instructor for evaluation and exam scheduling.
  4. Pay Applicable Fees: Admissions & Records.Pay required unit enrollment fees at the Admissions & Records / Student Accounts office prior to taking the exam.
  5. Complete the Exam: Transcript recording.Take the examination as scheduled by the department. Upon successful completion, units and grades will be recorded on your transcript.
