Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have been around since the introduction of the first stoplight. The first stoplight was installed in Detroit in 1920. ITS includes the following traffic management systems:

•        Traffic signal control systems

•        Truck and rail container management systems

•        Traffic message signs

•        Automatic number plate recognition

•        Speed and traffic violation cameras.

ITS also includes more advanced applications such as the following:

•        Security closed-circuit television (CCTV) used for surveillance

•        More advanced CCTV applications which integrate live data and feedback from a number of other sources, such as parking guidance and information systems, weather information, bridge de-icing systems, and the like.

•        ‘Predictive’ ITS systems which allow advanced modeling and comparison with historical baseline data.
