Speeds
The second average would result from the speeds of all the vehicles on a section of road with length X at one instant of time. In the figure below, this is illustrated by the vertical line at time T. Such observations could be obtained using aerial photographs taken in close succession to obtain the speeds of all of the vehicles in the first photo. This average is referred as the space mean speed:
