Traffic Stream Models

The two parameters of this simplified traffic stream model are the free-flow speed vf and the jam density kj. Free-flow speed is the speed of the traffic stream when flows approach zero under free-flow conditions while-jam density is the density that occurs when both flow and speed approach zero. The speed and the density that exist under maximum flow conditions (qmax) are referred as the optimum speed (vo) and optimum density (ko). The linear speed-density relationship is:
