WOODWORKING DEPARTMENT PARTICIPATES IN PATHWAY'S PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Students from Artesia and Tracy High School are taking an entry level woodworking class with Cerritos College. Upon completion of the course, participates will earn high school credit towards their diplomas. They will also earn college credit towards a degree if they chose to continue training after they graduate.
The class is part of Cerritos College’s Building Trades and Construction Industry
Pre-apprenticeship Program facilitated through the Pathways Department on campus.
The Pre-Apprenticeship Program is designed to connect in-school youth with clear entry
and exit points that lead to jobs in California's Building Trades and Construction
Industry. Students training with Cerritos College’s Woodworking Program can obtain
skills that lead to real jobs in the field and have an opportunity to earn an Associates
degree or transfer to California State University, Long Beach to earn a Bachelor’s
degree in Industrial Technology.
Instructor Mike Jones is teaching the course this semester. According to Mike, “Students have taken on a real interest for woodworking. They are happy to get out of the traditional classroom and come to Cerritos College to work in the shop.” Mike also expressed an interest in teaching a similar course in the fall. If funding permits, the department plans to continue its participation in this unique program.
CERRITOS COLLEGE WOODWORKING HOSTS THE LIE-NIELSEN HANDTOOL EVENT
On January 23-24, 2009 Cerritos College hosted the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event on campus. Attendees of this special program included woodworkers in and outside the Cerritos College community. At the show, guests had an opportunity to learn how to use the array of hand tools with the help of professional demonstrators through mini workshops. The emphasis of individual workshops was placed on using quality tools that make building handcrafted pieces—like joints—much easier.
Lie-Nielsen Toolworks makes some of the finest hand tools right here in the United States. They produce
over 50 different types of planes, chisels, saws and spokeshaves. They are headquartered
in Warren, Maine and travel all over the country promoting their tools and teaching
customers how to use them. At their shows, Lie Nielsen teams-up with other vendors
that sell similar products. At this particular event, they invited Glen-Drake Toolworks
and Wenzloff and Sons Saw Makers to share their tools and expertise with the group
at Cerritos College. They also invited Woodworker West magazine to attend and share
information about their publication.
Glen-Drake Toolworks makes finely engineered tools that facilitate hand-cut joinery. Some of their products
include gauges, hammers, kerf starters and scrapers. Wenzloff and Sons fabricates custom saws. They specialize in reproductions that are all hand filed
and set. Woodworker West magazine offers readers up-to-date information about the woodworking community in
the Western states of America. It is also an excellent source for learning skill building
techniques.
All the vendors had something special to offer our guests making the event educational and interesting. The event shined a spotlight on the woodworking program at Cerritos College for all those who traveled distances to attend. It was an honor hosting an event of this caliber for Lie-Nielsen and its counterparts. A special thanks to instructor Tony Fortner and Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for organizing this event.
TETZLAFF MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITS CERRITOS COLLEGE
On Friday, February 6, 2009 nearly 200 students from Tetzlaff Middle School were bused to Cerritos College to connect with the CTE programs on campus. The students were invited to visit different areas of the school; one stop included our state-of-the-art woodworking facility.
Instructor Carl Stammerjohn led five consecutive tours of school-aged kids through
the shop. First, he guided them through the library to illustrate the type of custom
cabinetry they could learn to build through the program. Then he walked them through
the furniture, CNC and solid surface laboratories. Carl spoke to the students about
various products made by woodworkers and encouraged them to pursue careers that required
both intellectual and specialized skills involving woodworking.
The event was coordinated by the Pathways Program on campus. It was designed to expose students to the community college and to introduce them to the CTE programs on campus. Other participating departments included Health Occupations, Community Education, Engineering, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology and Machine Tools. Tetzlaff Middle School is part of the ABC Unified School District and is located in Cerritos, California.
TAKING PRIDE IN THE SHOP
Over the holiday break, Instructor Carl Stammerjohn organized a clean-up to prep the shop walls for paint. A special thanks to those who participated in this event. We could not have done it without you.

CAREER EXPLORATION DAY FOR WOODWORKING YOUTH
On March 6, 2009 over 100 carpentry students from a variety of high school campuses will come together to participate in our very first Career Exploration Day at Cerritos College’s Woodworking Facility. The event is intended for students who have an interest in woodworking and want to explore different career options within the industry. Participating schools include Bellflower, Lynwood, Mayfair and Somerset High School.
At the workshop, students will rotate through four different learning stations: cabinetmaking, furniture making, woodturning, and Teacher TRAC options. Presenters at the different stations will provide information about the different career avenues in woodworking and demonstrate how to build a small project in that area of expertise.
The event is being coordinated and hosted by the Woodworking Department. The purpose of the event is to connect soon-to-be local high school graduates with our program and train them for jobs in the industry. A special thanks to participating parties of the Los Angeles ROP, Pathway and Teacher TRAC Programs.
CERRITOS COLLEGE TO HOST ITS 2009 SPRING JOB FAIR

for you! On March 26, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., Cerritos College is hosting
a job fair. Over 30 employers from a variety of industries are coming to meet you
face-to-face. This event is open to the public. Admission and parking are free. It
is recommended that you dress professionally at the fair. Also, bring your resume
and be prepared for on-site interviews.

Entry deadlines for the 2009 Student Appreciation Day and Fresh Wood competitions are approaching. Now is an excellent time to start preparing your projects to participate in these events.
2009 Student Appreciation Day for Woodworker
The college is hosting its annual Student Appreciation Day for Woodworkers on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. At the event, we will be hosting a student exhibition and competition. The contest features advanced and beginning projects from a variety of categories of work including cabinetry, furniture and turning. The deadline to register projects in the contest is May 1, 2009. 2009 Fresh Wood Student Competition
Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers (AWFS) is hosting their annual fair July 15-18, 2009. At the fair, students from all over the country will compete in the 2009 Fresh Wood Student Competition. The competition highlights outstanding construction and design achievements by students from the best high school and post-secondary woodworking programs in America. Finalist entries will be prominently displayed at the show and winners will be honored at the AWFS®FAIR Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 17, 2009. Entries are due by May 1, 2009. To enter, you must complete an entry form, submit a 250 word essay describing the processes and materials used to build the project and provide three photos of your project from different angles (hard and digital copies). p.m. to meet guest speaker Gary M. Katz and learn more about architectural millwork.
Gary is a general contractor who specializes in finish carpentry. He is also a popular
presenter who teaches seminars and hands-on workshops at national trade shows.
