AVL involves collective application of communications and electronic technologies to provide real-time tracking of vehicles.

AVL is an integral part of the ITS program category areas:
Used in APTS and CVO for fleet management, and in ATIS and ARTS for dynamic route guidance and mayday response.

AVL technological elements:

    Global Positioning System (GPS) for providing real-time positioning from 24 NAVSTAR GPS satellites controlled by the U.S. Dept. of Defense
