Career Counseling
Are you undecided? uncertain? Unsure?
About your major, that is ...
If so, you are not alone! Some studies have estimated over two-thirds of college students change their major during their first year and about 75% of college students are uncertain or tentative about their career choice when they enter college.
If you are uncertain about your major or career choice, now is the time to actively explore your options and gather information to make the best decision for yourself. Here are some ways you can do that:
- Explore majors in our Learning and Career Pathways
- Take a COUN 110 or COUN 200 class
- Attend Career Services workshops
- Talk to professors, family, friends, or even complete strangers and conducting an Informational Interview
- Utilize reputable career and major exploration resources to investigate options
- Consider how your values, interests, personality preferences, and skills can be incorporated into your career choice by completing a career assessment* and discussing the results with a counselor
- Pursue opportunities to gain related experience such as volunteer work, internships, or entry-level jobs
- Connect with a Career Counselor to discuss options!
If you are unsure about choosing the "right" major for you, we can help! We are here to guide you in discovering and successfully achieving your educational, career, and life goals. Please call (562) 860-2451 ext. 2357 to schedule an appointment or you can try our online appointment system.
And, keep in mind:
- Your choice of major will not dictate the rest of your life.
- There is a lot of flexibility between majors and careers. Many, if not most, occupations do not require a specific major.
- Most majors are not career-specific and will help you develop skills and knowledge that will be transferable to a wide range of career options.
* We offer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (WHO I am; WHY I want to work) and the Strong Interest Inventory (WHAT I want to do; WHERE I want to do it) for a nominal fee, and can point you to
informal, free assessments as well.
