Charting New Horizons: Benjamin Lavid's Journey into physics and research
Benjamin Lavid began his academic journey in biology at the University of Arizona,
where he enrolled shortly after graduating from Wilson High School in 2022. Drawn
initially to the pre-med track, Benjamin quickly discovered that the biology curriculum
heavily emphasized rote memorization, which did not resonate with his intellectual
interests. As he navigated his coursework, Benjamin became increasingly captivated
by the principles of physics and the underlying mechanics of the natural world. His
newfound passion for the physical sciences made him reevaluate his academic goals
and career aspirations. Benjamin decided to return to his hometown and is currently
completing lower division physics and math classes for transfer at Cerritos College.
During his brief time at Cerritos College, Benjamin has come to deeply appreciate the unwavering support from dedicated professors, particularly Mathematics Professor Patty George, whose passion for teaching inspires her students.
Benjamin has won the Sterling Math Scholarship this semester and has recently been accepted into a prestigious summer internship at the University of Washington, where he will conduct research on quantum materials. Out of 340 applicants, he was one of only eight students selected for a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Benjamin will transfer to UC Irvine this fall. Although he aims to pursue a Ph.D., he is still exploring options, particularly in theoretical cosmology and astrophysics. Benjamin hopes this internship will provide him with valuable insights to guide his future career path in physics.
