The Sports Medicine dual-enrollment program offered by Cerritos College immediately captured her attention, merging her love of sports with a burgeoning interest in medicine. “Starting the program while at Gahr was an exciting and meaningful experience for me,” Katherine recalls. “When I learned it counted toward my science credit, it was the perfect fit right from the start.”

Katherine’s journey began with a strong support system. Dual-enrollment classes were held on her high school campus, making the transition to college-level coursework more accessible. “We were guided every step of the way,” she said. With the dedicated involvement of Cerritos College faculty, including Dr. Mercedes Luna, Bryan Ramos, and Dr. Carrie Edwards, Katherine was empowered to excel. “Their commitment to our success left a lasting impression on me,” she said.

One of Katherine’s most memorable moments came during a visit to Cerritos College, where she participated in a taping competition. “Experiencing a college environment firsthand and applying what we learned in class made everything more tangible,” she reflects. The hands-on training she received—especially in injury taping and supporting athletes—solidified her passion for sports medicine. “It wasn’t just about academic knowledge; it was about growing in confidence and affirming my interest in this field,” she said.

As Katherine transitioned from high school to Cerritos College, her motivation to continue was fueled by a clear understanding of her academic and career goals. The supportive environment Katherine valued so much in high school continued at Cerritos College. “The sense of community has been a huge part of my experience,” said Katherine. “I was comfortable asking questions, and my classmates are just as willing to engage and learn together.” This camaraderie has made her educational journey collaborative and enjoyable.

What Katherine cherishes most about her time at Cerritos College is the connections and support she has built along the way. “We’re all working toward our goals together, and it makes the learning experience so much richer,” she says with enthusiasm. Katherine completed the Athletic Trainer Aid Certificate Program, the Fitness Specialist Certificate Program, and the kinesiology AA-T in spring 2026, and will transfer to Southern California University of Health Sciences to begin a Doctor of Chiropractic program in the fall.
