Retiree Mageya Sharp Recognized

The Cerritos College Board of Trustees recognized retiree Mageya Sharp, professor of Business Computerized Office Technologies, for her many years of service to the College on July 7. Mageya Sharp was studying business education at Cerritos College in 1969. She transferred to CSULB to complete undergraduate studies. In 1970, she began teaching at local Catholic high schools in the English, Business, and Foreign Language Departments. During this time, she wrote a curriculum program for business.

She continued with her graduate studies and in 1979 she earned an M.A. in Education Administration and earned a Superintendent’s License – Suma Cum Laude, from Pepperdine University.

In 1979, she was hired by Cerritos College to teach part-time in the secretarial program, and from 1980-1982 she was hired as a full-time temporary instructor in the Finance Department. In 1983, she became a full-time permanent instructor in the Office/Secretary program.

In 1984, she wrote a textbook for the Business Communications Office Technology 162 course, which was used in the department until 2018. Mageya became department chair in 1986, and instituted the bilingual (Spanish) office programs. She also began the online program for the department in 2000.

Mageya served on editorial boards for McGraw-Hill, Cengage, and Prentice-Hall in reviewing textbooks, as well as on various committees for ABC (Association of Business Communication). She created the Microsoft Office textbook for Word used in the office technology program since 2018.

At the College, Mageya served on the Curriculum Committee, Sabbatical Leave Committee, Program Review Committee, and several campus advisory committees. 

For the past several years, she worked on updating curriculum to make it more technologically appealing to students. She worked tirelessly on updating books, finding online resources, and other student material all in the effort to assist students.
