Latinx Heritage Month Celebration Highlights Dr. Magaly Lavadenz and Her Story of Herencia
Human Resources hosted a Latinx Heritage Month celebration event featuring guest speaker Dr. Magaly Lavadenz on September 28. The event also highlighted performances by students in the dance and music departments and Cuban cuisine prepared by culinary arts students. Before the event, a screening of Crossing Borders: A Cuban Returns was held. The 1998 documentary movie filmed Dr. Lavadenz’ return to Cuba after she was forced to leave as a child in 1962.
In the keynote address, Dr. Lavadenz spoke about the importance of keeping “Herencia” – a heritage that we inherit from our culture, home country, and family that makes us stronger. Referring to the documentary film Crossing Borders, she stressed sharing our stories is a way to bring kinship together.
Dr. Lavadenz is the Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Moral and Ethical Leadership and Executive Director of the Center for Equity and English Learners at Loyola Marymount University.
During the event, the Latinx Heritage essay contest winners were announced. First and second-place winners received a book/supplies scholarship.
