Alumni Filmmakers Inspire Current Film Students

film students and alumniFormer film students and award-winning filmmakers Michael and Larry Ervin talked to current film students via Zoom. Michele and Larry, who were working as professionals in other fields, shared their journey of having taken film production classes at Cerritos College and going on to making their films under their SilentNoise Productions banner and the challenges they’ve faced.

In the Zoom session, Michele and Larry screened some of their award-winning films, including a documentary about hair care for African Americans and another about at-risk inner-city kids in Compton learning about horse riding. They also shared ideas about becoming resourceful in areas that many students haven’t considered.

“They’ve produced films that were meaningful and resonated with audiences,” said Film Professor Steven Hirohama. “It's also great to see how Michele and Larry have recruited students to mentor. For the last feature film they produced, Hard Town, they recruited six Cerritos College film students to work.

“So much insightful advice from a director who was where we are right now. I now feel that I too can do this,” said a student in attendance.
