CERRITOS COLLEGE
PROTOCOL FOR NEEDLE STICK / OR BLOOD EXPOSURE
Report the incident to your faculty supervisor immediately. She/he will fill out
the appropriate incident report and referral slip to
expedite the process.
1. Wound Care/First Aid
a. Express blood from puncture wound.
b. Clean wound with soap and water.
c. Flush mucous membranes with water or saline.
2. It is recommended that appropriate medical follow-up be obtained.
3. If the injured person refuses follow-up services, be sure to:
a. have the individual sign the enclosed form declining medical treament
(Student Health and Wellness Center Refusal of Treatment Form).
b. This form must be signed by the injured person and the staff at the SHWC.
4. The facility director in charge will obtain source patient's permission for blood
testing. This service will be covered by the Cerritos College Workers Compensation
(See Attached Forms).
5. The student is NOT to ask the source patient her/himself. It is against Federal
and
California State laws for the student to request testing permission of the source
patient.
6. Your instructor will counsel you.
7. You will need to go to another treatment center as soon as possible for baseline
data.
You should be tested for HBsAG (if not vaccinated), anti HIV, and HCV.
8. We recommend you use the "Health First Medical" facility as they are very familiar
with our students and our needs. A list of additional medical facilities is
attached.
9. The instructor will inform the Division Secretary or Division Dean of the nature
of the
incident/occurrence. Any incident reports will be signed by the instructor.
10. The student will be asked to sign several reports and will be informed of any
additional steps.
11. Retesting occurs at three intervals:
a. 6 weeks
b. 12 weeks
c. 6 months

13. All procedures, testing and results, WILL REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL.
14. Institute any changes which might help to prevent further occurrences.
