SAND SANCTUARY

Description: It is an interactive installation addressing “Sanctuary Campus” created by the DH Arts Collective in the former art building at Cerritos College. This immersive space filled with sand invites the public to work together to create a large-scale sand castle and discuss the meaning of sanctuary in a Trump administration. Sand can be used to build a fortress, but it also can be destroyed in a matter of seconds.

Location: FA42A

Participating Artists: Allison Garcia, Omar Solorio, Josiah Gibson and Derek Prado

Allison Garcia is an artist and B.A. studio art candidate at California State University Dominguez Hills. She is working on receiving her BA in Studio Art with a minor in Art History. Her work has been exhibited in the UNICEF Silent Art Auction Fundraiser at the University of California in Irvine, The Salon Style Art Show in Los Angeles, and featured in, Today, Pop Riot and Untitled at California State University Dominguez Hills.

Omar Solorio is a B.A. studio art candidate at California State University Dominguez Hills. A fixation with deviance and its manifestations in society are evident in the work, which ranges from painting, drawing, sculpture, and collages. Solorio chooses to mimic signage found in urban streets and altered them, in what he calls “artistic defacement”, where intellectual property is being tampered with and minimized. His objective is to shine a light on the politics of how signage places a role in controlling our movements and desires in public and private spaces. Omar was also the recipient of the 2016 Winston Hewitt Memorial Scholarship and is a McNair Scholar Fellow.

Derek Prado is a B.A. studio art candidate at California State University Dominguez Hills, has exhibited work in an art show: South Gate Pop Art show also featured works in CSUDH in "Today", "Pop Riot", and "Untitled". His works focuses on the use of color and form to define the past and present manifestation of art culture.

Josiah Gibson is a B.A. studio art candidate at California State University Dominguez Hills. There, he helped start the art club Dominguez Hills Arts Collective. He has shown at Washington Reid Gallery, where he also volunteers working with artists with developmental disabilities.
