Slanguage Studios

The art collective Slanguage Studio, originated as an artist-run-studio space that grew organically from an active studio to a public-engagement-sculptural space, interfacing with community, national and international artists, and youth. Founded in 2002 in Wilmington, the heart of the port of Los Angeles, Slanguage Studio opened its doors to the public, leading teen workshops, hosting art exhibitions, and leading music and performance events. It’s residency SlangA.I.R. has been a catalyst for interfacing with young emerging artists, youth, teaching artists and the community. Co-founders Mario Ybarra Jr. and Karla Diaz have been in the forefront of many pilot events, exhibitions and programs in diverse cities, museums, and art galleries all over the world. Their work has been presented in different art institutions, such as the ICA Boston, Whitney Museum, LACMA, MOCA, the TaTe Modern in London, Chicago Hyde Park Center, ARCO Fair in Madrid Spain, COLAB in Los Angeles, and Made in LA biennial among others. Today Slanguage has an offsite extension lab space at LAXART in Hollywood CA, where they continue to run programming.
