Women's History Month celebration kicks off

Las Cilibri and Folklorico RevolucionThe 2025 Women’s History Month celebration launched on March 4 with an inspiring live performance featuring Las Colibri, an all-female mariachi band, and Folklorico Revolucion, talented Mexican ballet dancers, celebrating the strength and artistry of women.

On March 5, the Women, Cookbooks, Activism presentation featured Maite Gomez-Rejón of ArtBites and co-host of the Hungry for History podcast and the Culinary Arts program. Maite discussed the historical significance of cookbooks, highlighting authors Vicenta Torres de Rubio and Jesefina Velasquez.

Cookbook presentationVicenta's 1896 cookbook, Cocina Michoacana, played a crucial role in uniting Mexican cuisine by gathering recipes from women throughout the country. Meanwhile, Josefina empowered women by establishing a cooking school and publishing a magazine. Over her career, she published more than 150 cookbooks, including a bilingual book for American homes in 1947.

The presentation concluded by reflecting on women's roles in preserving and sharing culinary traditions, followed by a tasting of some historical recipes prepared by the Culinary Arts program.

The Women's History Month festivities continue throughout the month. Visit the web for more WHM events.
