Oil on Canvas

Hung Viet Nguyen has developed a unique painterly aesthetic by combining a variety of traditional Eastern and Western forms, media, and techniques. His primary subject is often the landscape. Sometimes, these manifest as interpretations of real world environments. But for his Sacred Landscape series, Nguyen creates a visual expression of the senses rather than a literal representation of a specific landmark. He gives us ancient trees, flowing waterfalls, lush mounds of hills, and glowing streams. While portions of Nguyen’s work suggest the influence of traditional forms such as woodblock prints, oriental scroll paintings, ceramic art, mosaic, and stained glass, his ultimate expression as an artist asserts a more contemporary sensibility. These sensual landscapes are produced from a complex, labor intensive use of oil paint which reveals a mastery of texture. Nguyen works these deep, rich, and perfectly formed layers of oil paint, sculpting his work as much as painting it.

Born in Vietnam in 1957, Hung Viet Nguyen studied biology at the Science University in Saigon. After relocating to the U.S. in 1982, Nguyen found work as an illustrator, graphic artist and designer. Nguyen’s paintings have been exhibited at Art Fairs including Art Market San Francisco, Art Context New York, Palm Beach Art Miami, Los Angeles Contemporary Art and the Houston Fine Arts Fair. His honors include the Juror’s Choice Awards, 2013, and the San Diego Art Institute Biennial International Award Exhibition, 2015.
