The Caucasian Chalk Circle Portrays Recovering of Devastated Land and Spirit

The Caucasian Chalk Circled

WHAT: The Caucasian Chalk Circle by the German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht is set in the Soviet Union around the end of World War II. The fruit growing commune and the goat farmer commune dispute over who is to own and manage the valley after the Nazis have retreated and left it abandoned. The goat farmers used the valley before the war, but the fruit growers proposes more productive use of the land. To support their claim, the fruit growers prepare a play about a peasant girl who rescues a baby and becomes a better mother than the wealthy natural parents. Should the land go to those who will use it most productively, not those who had previous ownership?
