Psi Beta Receives a National Award

Psi Beta studentsThe Cerritos College chapter of Psi Beta was honored with a Chapter Excellence Award by the Psi Beta national honor society at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in August 2022.

The Chapter Excellence Award recognizes chapters that have achieved the mission of Psi Beta, professional development of psychology students at community colleges through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research, and community service.

The Cerritos College Psi Beta held bimonthly meetings over zoom and hosted guest speakers from the community and Cerritos College. The alumni panel representing Cerritos College alumni who have transferred to four-year universities was the most well-received event. The members participated in a UC San Diego workshop that mentors students interested in clinical psychology to increase diversity in clinical programs. Psi Beta also hosted two induction ceremonies to honor students being inducted into the national honor society of Psi Beta.

“Getting the chance to be involved with Psi Beta Psychology Club has opened the door to get to know other members, get along, be involved as a group, and gain skills as an officer,” said Cerritos College Psi Beta Vice President Stephany Reyes, who majors in psychology and social behavioral science. Stephany plans on transferring in the fall of 2023 and continuing her education to pursue a Ph.D. to work as a school counselor to help students and families.

Psi Beta is the national honors society in psychology for community colleges and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). Professors Kimberley Duff and Jaclyn Ronquillo volunteer countless hours as chapter advisors to mentor students. Psi Beta serves as a starting point for many students who go on to pursue psychology at the professional level, and the Cerritos College chapter has produced a large number of students who earn graduate degrees in psychology.
