Falcon Student Team Participates in NASA SUITS Final Challenge
The College’s student team participated in the 2023 NASA SUITS Challenge final stage.
Representing the Cerritos College team were Jose Roque, Michael John de la Pena, Isaac
Gonzalez, and John Quilantang. John graduated from Cerritos College in 2022 and now
attends Cal State Fullerton.
The NASA SUITS (Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students) Project challenges students nationwide to design and create spacesuit information displays within augmented reality (AR) environments.
The Cerritos College team designed and implemented VIRGIL (Virtual Intuition and Reality
Guiding Interface, Lunar edition), their Augmented Reality software application, and
lighting and distance-finding hardware solutions to inspire future user interface
designs for NASA's upcoming Artemis missions on the moon. As the culmination of the
competition, the students tested their project in the "rock yard," an area that simulates
the lunar and Martian surfaces at Johnson Space Center in Houston in May. They successfully
navigated and interacted with tools, and controlled the rover using VIRGIL. Congratulations,
Team Falcons!
