Class of 2024 feature | Annie Gutierrez overcomes life’s obstacles to help put smiles on others

Growing up, Annie Gutierrez was always interested in art. After graduating from Lynwood High School in 2016, she enrolled at Cerritos College to study animation and graphic design. Three years into her studies in 2019, Annie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which forced her to take a year-long break from college to focus on treatment. Journalism students and Christian Brown at SCPR

Journalism students get a glimpse of a real newsroom at SCPR

Led by Journalism Professor and Department Chair Christian Brown, six journalism students recently took a tour of LAist, a non-profit media organization and home to NPR affiliate 89.3 FM Southern California Public Radio (SCPR). Students had the opportunity to visit the studio and meet journalists and the senior editor. Thanks to a grant from the Golden Globe Foundation, the Journalism Department established an internship program with LAist to address the underrepresentation of diverse voices in news media. One of the participating students, Diana Morales, was selected for the 11-week internship program at LAist exclusively for Cerritos College students in the summer.
