Cerritos College Associate Professor of Photography Christina Fernandez was named among ARTnews’ prestigious list of 75 Latinx Artists to Know, a recognition spotlighting influential artists shaping the global visual art world. ARTnews, a leading New York-based digital and print publication, recently featured these 75 Latinx artists for their impact on the art world and their communities.

Christina is known for her powerful photography that focuses on themes of migration, labor, gender, and her Mexican American heritage. With over 30 years of experience, she captures everyday moments of communal and familial spaces, sometimes in challenging light, revealing deep, untold stories.

Christina earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1989 and a master’s degree from CalArts in 1996. She has served as a beloved professor at Cerritos College since 2001. Her work has been showcased in top museums, including the Getty Museum, LACMA, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2021, Christina received the Latinx Artist Fellowship, an initiative of the US Latinx Art Forum, and in 2022, she was featured on PBS for her contributions to the arts.

“We are excited to see ARTNews celebrating our own Christina Fernandez as one of the 75 Latinx Artists to Know,” said Dean of Fine Arts and Communication Gary Pritchard. “This acknowledgment elevates the rich diversity, resilience, and innovation of Latinx creative communities that the arts at Cerritos College support. Christina’s creative work and passion for teaching provide our students a wonderful opportunity to study photography from one of the best in the field.”
