WHAT: Experience 1934 South Texas through Tío Juan, a bold adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, set on a working pecan farm during the Great Depression. This production by Cerritos College transforms Russian gentry into Tejano landholders, exploring themes of land, language, and power.
The story follows Juan, a middle-aged manager who sacrifices his dreams, and his niece Sonia, the farm's rightful owner, as they confront their unfulfilled potential after the arrival of a retired professor and his restless young wife. Performed in English with integrated Spanish dialogue, the play remains true to Chekhov’s text while reflecting local cultural nuances. Whether you're a Chekhov enthusiast or new to theater, Tío Juan offers a compelling connection between classic literature and the histories of the Nueces corridor.
