Frequently Asked Questions

Being first-generation means that neither of your parents has completed a four-year bachelor’s degree in the United States. Even if your parents support your education, if they haven't navigated the U.S. college system themselves, you are eligible for the extra guidance TRIO provides.

What we need: You will simply indicate your parents' highest level of education on your application.

This is based on federal guidelines related to your household size and taxable income. If you are receiving financial aid, like a Pell Grant, or if paying for college costs feels like a significant stressor, there is a high chance you qualify.

What we need: We may ask for a copy of your most recent tax return or financial aid award letter to verify your status.

At Cerritos College, you may hear about both TRIO and EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services). Many students think they have to choose one, but the good news is you can participate in both at the same time to create a stronger support system.

How They Work Together for You:

  • A Shared Goal: Both programs are here to help you stay enrolled, graduate, and transfer.
  • A Different Focus: While EOPS often provides direct financial support like book vouchers and required counseling check-ins, TRIO focuses on long-term guidance and consistent relationship-building with a dedicated advisor.
  • Double the Support: Together, these programs provide both the financial help you need today and the academic roadmap you need for your future.

If you are applying to TRIO as a student with a disability, you can absolutely be a part of our community—there is just a specific process to follow to ensure you are supported correctly. Because TRIO follows federal guidelines, we partner with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) to review and verify disability eligibility.

How the Process Works:

  • Verification: SAS is the official campus office that reviews medical or educational documentation and confirms eligibility.
  • Confidentiality: All your records are maintained in a secure, professional system.
  • Your Choice: Even if you are verified through SAS, you are not required to use academic accommodations to remain in TRIO; you always have the choice to participate in TRIO services regardless of your decision to use accommodations.

The TRIO Counselor will be collaborate with SAS to streamline the verification process for TRIO eligibility requirements.
