Dr. Sheela Hoyle named Outstanding Educational Manager of the Year

Dr. Jose Fiero, Dr. Sheela Hoyle, James Cody Birkey, and Colleen McKinleyDr. Sheela Hoyle served as the interim dean of counseling during the 2022-2023 academic year.  She has over 20 years of experience as, a department chair, counselor, and online counselor lead and has served on many committees. Her innovation led to the development of online classes in the counseling division and the online counseling consortium. Dr. Hoyle has shown an unwavering passion to inspire innovation within the college. 

Dr. Hoyle’s leadership skills as department chair during the onset of the pandemic helped to mobilize the department to support students to reach their academic and personal goals in a virtual format.  She was also part of a team who collaboratively led the transition to the new LCP counseling model. 

Dr. Hoyle recognizes the talents of each team member. She brings positivity to the work environment while encouraging faculty and staff to utilize their strengths to create change. She is a visionary, who prides herself on achieving success through the ripple effects of the team. Her motto is “A coach cannot win the game without the players”.

Dr. Hoyle’s leadership style has been identified as caring, gentle, encouraging, loving, yet effective. She tirelessly inspires individuals to pursue excellence in their ability to serve students and in their personal lives.

Dr. Hoyle exemplifies courageous leadership, selflessness, enthusiasm, courage, compassion, and perseverance, which are all traits that are essential to her success as an effective leader in the counseling division.

Dr. Hoyle is known for celebrating diversity and empowerment by intentionally addressing the needs of all students, faculty and staff.  She believes that “Education is the key to empowerment.” In addition to being a leader on campus, Dr. Hoyle is a role model and mentor for individuals in the local communities. She is a member of several organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an organization that prides itself on service in the community. She is a proud mother of three adults who have witnessed her passion for education and life and have charted their own successful educational journeys as graduates from U.C. Berkeley, M.I.T., Howard University, CSULB, and LMU.
