STEM Students Show Santa Fe Springs Families that Science Can Be Fun
Cerritos College’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students
shared hands-on science and math activities with families during the Science Fair
at Santa Fe Springs Library. More than 100 families attended the fun-filled afternoon.
Students from the Astronomy Club provided views of the sun and sun spots through a telescope and answered questions about the solar system. Members of the Women’ in STEM Club helped children extract DNA from strawberries, while students from the Bio Chem Club and SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) Club taught families about chemistry using milk and food coloring. Magnetism, electricity, and Mars rovers were demonstrated by the ASET and Aerodynamics Clubs and physics students. Math Club provided raffle prizes and brain teasers.
“These students from STEM departments and clubs did a great job showing children and their parents how fun science and math can be,” said Connie Boardman, instructional dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics Division, Cerritos College.
